4 titles for Russia in Cardiff

Four very successful Russian players - Nikolaenko, Vislova, Durkin and SorokinaThe annual Yonex Welsh Open took place this weekend at Cardiff’s Welsh Institute of Sport. Part of World Badmintons International Series. Players from 21 countries descended upon the Welsh capital city. Spectators were not disappointed as the standard of play was very high, exhibiting some top class badminton. The Russians has an impressive tournament with representation in 4 of the 5 finals.

The finalists in women's singles - Tatiana Bibik and Anita Raj KaurFinals day at the Welsh and the spectators were given their money’s worth. First up was the mixed doubles and both finalists came from Russia.  Vitalij Durkin and Nina Vislova defeated Alexander Nikolaenko and Valeri Sorokina in straight sets 21-13 21-13.

Next up was the women’s singles final and Tatiana Bibik from Russia and Anita Raj Kaur of Malaysia did not disappoint.  With one set a piece and 18 all in the final game, it was anybodies for the taking. However the Russian came out on top winning 21-19, 15-21, 21-18.
 
Kristian Nielsen and Pedro Martins - the men's singles finalistsMen’s singles threw up another 3 set match, Kristian Nielsen of Denmark had a great start taking the first set. Pedro Martins of Portugal turned the tables in the second set with a win.  The third set saw the Dane run away with the game. Final score 21-19, 12-21, 21-9.
 
In the men’s doubles Vitalij Durkin & Alexander Nikolaenko of Russia defeated Peter Kasbauer & Oliver Roth from Germany. A close two set encounter saw the Russians take the title 21-18, 21-18.
 
The last final of the day was the women’s doubles with Russia vs. Malaysia fighting it out. A two set encounter, Russians Nina Vislova & Valeri Sorokina, showed why they are ranked 13 in the world and won 21-14, 21-16 against Malaysians Anita Raj Kaur & Joanne Swee Ling Quay.
